Summer 2010 in Three Mixes Part Three and the Winner is.....

The final mix in the trilogy of my summer favourites brought a new
artist to my attention and also a new sound. The mix is one in the
series of excellent FACT magazine podcasts mixed by the aptly named
Fantastic Mr. Fox. To describe the mix as simply dubstep would do it a
disservice as there is so much more to this mix than just dubstep. I
think this music is best described as forward thinking electronic music
with a glitchy feel, think Modeselektor meets Burial.

I was gripped from the off with the vocal snippet at the beginning which
then drops into a glitchy electronic 2-step beat, the mix itself does
not have as many stand out "big tunes" as the previous two mixes that I
have rated this summer, but what it lacks in anthems it more than makes
up for in future music goodness!

Personal favourite moments of the mix are Fantastic Mr. Fox's bootleg of
Brandy which uses the Brandy vocals to create something that reminds me
of Burial whilst also maintaining originality. The highlight of the mix is a
tune I just cannot stop playing and it hurts me that I will have to wait
until November to own it it's a Fantastic Mr. Fox production from his
forthcoming EP "Evelyn", art is said to exist to evoke an emotion and this particular track is the most emotive electronic record that I have heard in a long time the electronic synths on this as yet untitled masterpiece just tug on the heart strings. The main complaint of the mix is that it is too short however there is enough time before the ending to mix in arguably the biggest tune in dubstep this summer James Blake’s majestic Kelis sampling CMYK.

In short if you are open to fresh sounds then I could not recommend this enough, my iPod tells me that I have listened to it 17 times, a grand total of 8 and a half hours of absolutely brilliant aural entertainment. That total is only going to increase too! So download it, listen to it, tell me what you think.

Summer 2010 in Three Mixes Part Two

Next in the series is my second favourite mix of the summer, the
delightful disco provided by Aeroplane in their "Late July Mix"
available from their Soundcloud page. Opening with a warm bass line
followed by a reminiscent of a Chic production, the mix begins with an
instrumental version of "Games People Play" by Sweet G which is close to
30 years old yet still works wonderfully today. The mix is laden with
funky guitar riffs, sing along vocals and at times shares some
similarities with acid house.

The highlight of the mix is personally four tunes in, with Grum's remix
of "My Kz Ur Bf" by indie band Everything Everything which will almost
certainly play an integral role in my next sub 120bpm mix. The way Grum
alters the rhythm of the vocal in the verses is exquisite and complex, turning the tune from what for me is a run of the mill indie track and creating a poppy dance floor filler.

The mix continues the route through gay arpeggios and flamboyance that Aeroplane have become renowned for. Their remix of Chromeo is a true example of the flamboyant nature the corny vocal style and 80s style sounds combined with the Aeroplane production works to create a full on dance around your man bags tune. The mix progresses nicely through to the epic Prins Thomas and Lindstrom remix of the new Chemical Brothers’ track “Swoon” not long after and you are transported back to the early 80s where the mix began as Yoko Ono sings us out of a thoroughly enjoyable how of aural entertainment.

Summer 2010 in Three Mixes Part One

During the course of Summer 2010 I have listened to a lot of mixes in a lot of styles, it has been tough to narrow it down to my three favourites with many strong contenders. The quality of the three mixes that I have chosen are undeniably good and they represent where my tastes are currently based musically in that the styles of the music included on them are certainly quite juxtaposed. These are three mixes that are well worth a listen.

I start with two hours of high octane dubstep from the dubstep super group Magnetic Man. Benga, Skream and Artwork deliver an outstanding and at times pounding journey through the summers big hitting dubstep anthems. Approached as more of a DJ set than the live performance the essential mix showcases a fair few tunes from the groups forthcoming album, highlights being the anthemic single "I Need Air", the hypnotic "The Bug" which has a vocal remnant of Adam Freeland's "We Want Your Soul" and the Ms Dynamite featuring banger "Fire". If you were at a festival this summer and took in some dubstep this mix is sure to bring back some memories!
